UCSB Prof. Glenn H. Fredrickson to Join Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation as Director and Chief Technology Officer

Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation (MCHC; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshimitsu Kobayashi) announced today the appointment of Dr. Glenn H. Fredrickson, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials of the University of California, Santa Barbara as Chief Technology Officer (CTO)/Managing Executive Officer and a candidate for a Member of the Board.

He will assume the position of CTO/Managing Executive Officer as of April 1, 2014 and, through the resolution of the next shareholders meeting to be held in June, a Member of the Board. MCHC will also establish an R&D Strategy Office upon his assumption of CTO/Managing Executive Officer.

Professor Fredrickson received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1984. After rising to the position of Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, he joined UCSB in 1990 where he has served as Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials since 1991. Professor Fredrickson has distinguished himself as an international authority on polymer science and technology and a consultant/advisor to a number of global chemical, materials, and life science companies including Dow Chemical and DSM. His research contributions have been recognized through a series of prestigious awards and recognition by professional societies, including election to the National Academy of Engineering (USA).

MCHC and Professor Fredrickson have engaged in a long and productive relationship since he was appointed as Director of the Mitsubishi Chemical Center for Advanced Materials (MC-CAM)*1 located at UCSB, which was jointly established in 2001 by UCSB and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, a subsidiary of MCHC. Since 2009, Professor Fredrickson has also served as Executive Director for The KAITEKI Institute, Inc. (TKI),*2 a global strategy and research arm of MCHC. Upon assuming the MCHC CTO position, he will step down from his role at TKI, but will retain his current faculty and MC-CAM appointments at UCSB.

Under the leadership of Professor Fredrickson, MCHC will implement a strategic R&D program for realization of “KAITEKI” by adopting a global open innovation approach that will integrate industry-academia-government research collaborations and venture investments with MCHC’s own cutting-edge technologies. The R&D Strategy Office will further strive for synergy of group R&D activities, coordinating and strengthening technology platforms of MCHC’s operating subsidiaries to support and accelerate new business development.

*1 Mitsubishi Chemical Center for Advanced Materials (MC-CAM): a science and technology center at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) that was jointly established by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and UCSB in 2001. Its research currently focuses on the areas of LED lighting materials, organic photovoltaic modules and materials, and organic photo semiconductors,.

*2 The KAITEKI Institute, Inc. (TKI): a global research institute established by MCHC in 2009 that is focused on meeting 21st century challenges in energy, the environment, and healthcare.
