Biodiversity

The preservation of biodiversity (the interconnectedness of diverse forms of life) is the foundation of life and is essential to realizing prosperous, comfortable human societies. Preserving biodiversity brings a host of benefits, including preserving sources of food and water, fertile soil and fuel, and genetic and pharmacological resources, purifying the water and air, mitigating climate change and alleviating natural disasters, providing habitats for living organisms to grow and thrive, and inspiring unique cultures and scientific discoveries rooted in nature. In order to preserve biodiversity, the Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group is pushing ahead with activities based on guidelines issued by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment.

Preservation of Biodiversity

Reducing the Impact on Ecosystems

The Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group endorsed the Declaration of Biodiversity by Keidanren* in 2010 and has been focusing on how to reduce its business activities' effect on biodiversity.

Declaration of Biodiversity by Keidanren: Issued in March 2009 by Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), this declaration comprises seven main goals, including calls to aim for corporate activities in harmony with the natural environment and to promote corporate management for sustainable resource use.

Promoting the Preservation of Biodiversity

Referring to the Japanese Ministry of the Environment's Guidelines for Private Sector Engagement in Biodiversity, the Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group is promoting the preservation of biodiversity by reflecting the Group's impact on biodiversity in environmental preservation activities.

Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Products’Evaluation of Contribution Towards Biodiversity

In 2016 some products considered to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity were chosen among our Performance Products domain, Health Care domain and Industrial Materials domain in Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Products. Since an evaluation of the degree to which they contribute towards biodiversity conservation is not yet established, we have obtained cooperation from Prof. Naoki Kachi, Tokyo Metropolitan University who is the chairman of the Committee on Guidelines for Private Sector Engagement in Biodiversity in MOE. These products were chosen out of tens of thousands of products. They were evaluated and chosen based on comprehensive viewpoints including direct contribution towards biodiversity, environmental impact from whole product life cycle, economic impact to mention but a few.
